Museums and art galleries

The museum presents a collection of archaeology, ethnography, local history, visual arts, watchmaking and natural history.  

The Castle of La Sarraz (Fondation du Château de la Sarraz) has been a manorial residence for nine centuries and is a museum since a few decades, showing the authentic interior and living rooms. In 1982, a horse museum was housed in the castle as well.

The museum is dedicated to everything related to horses.  

The museum is dedicated to 5000 years of history of the game and offers a unique (historical) collection.  

The open-air exhibition is dedicated to the painter and sculptor Gustave Courbet (1819-1877). This open-air museum of the master of realism shows his works and life story using new media.  It shows his artistic importance and his special bond with Switzerland in the last phase of his life in La Tour-de-Peilz (1874-1877).

The museum shows how a farmer family lived in Laax about 200 years ago. The development of Laax from a farming village to a tourist resort in the 20th century is also themed.

The foundation wants to document the history of the fortifications in the canton of Schwyz and make them accessible to the general public. The wildlife and hunting museum informs about hunting in all its facets and historical and cultural developments, the people who hunt, the wild animals and hunting methods.

The Monastery (Schönthal Kloster) with its collection of sculptures in the garden and exhibitions in the church is open to visitors. The Romanesque monastery church that itself houses a gallery for temporary exhibitions. The Monastery is one of the oldest in Switzerland and a showpiece of Romanesque architecture.  

The museum shows the history and development of Langenthal and surrounding territories, the building ceramics of St. Urban and the geology of the region.
