Museums and art galleries

The museum highlights centuries of Medieval and Renaissance art. The exhibition on the first floor of the Rohan Palace presents an overview of the history of European painting from its debut to 1870, the Italian and Flemish Primitives, Renaissance and Mannerism, Baroque, Naturalism and Classicism and finally modernism in the 19th century.

The history museum (musée d’histoire), located in the heart of the citadel, presents historical, archaeological and ethnographic collections from Prehistory, the Gallo-Roman period to the High Middle Ages and the Bartholdi area.  

The museum  (musée d’art moderne) presents Maurice Jardot’s donation (150 paintings, sculptures and 20th century drawings) and a collection marked by cubism and surrealism (Picasso, Léger, Braque, Gris, Laurens, Masson and others).

Tour  46 (Tower 46) presents the temporary exhibitions of the museums in Belfort.  

On 26 February 1802, the house of 140 Grande-Rue in Besançon was the birthplace of Victor Hugo (deceased 1885). This house (Maison Victor Hugo) now presents a contemporary scenography of the political struggle of the committed writer and organises exhibitions and lectures on his activities.
