Eurovision Song Contest 2025: Malmö hands over to Basel
28 January 2025
On 28 January, the official handover from the city of Malmö to Basel and the ‘Semi-Final Draw Ceremony’ for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 took place at Basel’s Museum of Fine Arts (Kunstmuseum Basel).
The 37 countries participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 were allocated to one of the two Semi-Finals in the draw. The Semi-Finals will occur on 13 and 15 May and the Final on 17 May 2025.
The ceremony was presented by Jennifer Bosshard and Jan van Ditzhuijzen
As part of the ceremony, Carina Nilsson, Chairwoman of Malmö City Council, presented Conradin Cramer, President of the Government of Basel, with a coat specially designed for Basel.
The colourful robe, initially designed by Malmö designer Pampas and worn by Nemo in 2024, has been reworked and complemented with elements of the original Malmö ESC attributes. The words “Creativity, Democracy, and United by Music” on the coat symbolise Malmö’s values during the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, including the greeting ‘From Malmö to Basel with Love’.
Two new developments concern this Eurovision Song Contest: first, the people of Basel approved the event by a large majority (66%) in a referendum.
Secondly, the concept of the ceremony on 28 January, the stage design, the recordings and the broadcast were produced by 14 students from the Graubünden University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Graubünden), supported by experts from Swiss television.
