Museum of Yverdon and Swiss Fashion Museum

The Yverdon and Region Museum (Musée d’Yverdon et région) is one of the oldest museums in the canton of Vaud; its origins date back to the second half of the 18th century. Officially recognised by the canton of Vaud, the museum houses a significant collection of regional archaeological artefacts spanning prehistory, the Gallo-Roman and medieval periods.

The Prehistory, Celtic and Roman times to the early Middle Ages

The museum is the repository for archaeological material from the Roman period found in the former district of Yverdon, as well as material from all other periods for the areas of Yverdon-les-Bains and Cheseaux-Noréaz.es tens of thousands of items from Yverdon and the region, covering almost every period from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages.

  

The ethnographical collection

In addition to several groups of objects brought back in the 19th and 20th centuries by Yverdon citizens on their expeditions or leisure trips to Asia and Africa, the MYR also houses an exceptional ethnographical collection of indigenous American artefacts.

The historical collection

The historical collection comprises a wide range of objects that document the region’s history. In particular, it comprises a very extensive collection of iconographic works depicting Yverdon and its region, dating from the 16th century to the present day: more than 800 drawings, watercolours, and prints, as well as several dozen oil paintings on canvas.

There is also an extensive collection of photographs. The collection also contains several thousand pieces of furniture, decorative art objects and stone artefacts, which provide material evidence of the region’s history.

The Egyptological collection

The centrepiece of the Egyptological collections is the funerary ensemble of the priest Nes-Shou from the Ptolemaic period (c. 200 BC). In addition to the mummified body of the deceased, it comprises his richly decorated sarcophagus with basin and lid, cartonnage elements and a Book of the Dead. The Egyptological collection now comprises around 400 items.

Swiss Fashion Museum

The museum (musée suisse de la mode) houses 5 000 pieces from the 18th century to the present, the archives of fashion designer Robert Piguet (1898-1953), and organises temporary exhibitions.
