Senda culturala

Zernez lies at the beginning the Senda culturala (cultural trail), leading through the Lower Engadine (Unterengadin). The village lies on the River InnIn 1365, the members of the Gotteshausbund (League of the House of God), founded in 1367 in Chur, met here for the first time. The culture trail leads from Zernez to Susch, Lavin, Guarda, Bos-cha, Ardez, Ftan, Tarasp/Vultera, Scuol, Sent, Ramosch, Vna, Tschlin and finally Martina, passing many historic sites and beautiful landscapes on the way, including the Swiss Natural Park. One noteworthy sight on the trail is the ruins of the ghost town of Gonda between Lavin and Guarda. The village was abandoned in the 16th century. Another prominent site is the Fuorcha between Zernez and Susch, a former execution site with gallows for the neighbouring communities. The Senda culturala goes south from Zernez to St. Müster and Sta. Maria and continues from Martina up north to Samnaun. (Source and further information: www.kulturwege-schweiz.ch).
