The Barragan Foundation

Established in 1996, the Barragan Foundation is a non-profit institution based in Birsfelden, Switzerland (canton of Basel-Landschaft).

Its primary focus is preserving and studying the Barragán Archive holdings and collecting related photographs by Armando Salas Portugal.

After the first phase of activity dedicated to assessing and organizing the archival holdings, the Barragan Foundation has undertaken a systematic critical survey of Luis Barragán’s realised and unrealised works.

The results of this investigation are presented in a comprehensive publication featuring a detailed analysis of each of his projects, complemented by a large selection of previously unpublished documents.

In the framework of a partnership between the Barragan Foundation and the Vitra Design Museum, the Barragán Archive joined the museum’s archival holdings in 2022.

The new premises on the Vitra Campus include the Barragán Gallery, a permanent exhibition space, and a Study Room with a specialized library.

It will further facilitate scholarly research and cooperation with other institutions, continuing the Barragan Foundation’s support of academic work and educational exhibitions and publications.
