Fondation Bodmer

The core collection of the library of the foundation (Fondation Martin Bodmer) is made up of some 200 ancient western and about 100 ancient Eastern manuscripts, 2000 autograph documents, 270 incunabula, books printed before 1 500 (a tenth of which are Rara and Unica) and several thousand original editions dating from the 16th to the 20th century.

The collections of the library comprise over 150 000 items in total. For archaeologists, art historians, papyrologists, medievalists, specialists of French, German, English, Italian, Spanish, Scandinavian, Slavic, and Eastern literature, for historians of law and the sciences, printing, and writing, this collection constitutes an almost inexhaustible source for research and discovery.

The permanent exhibition of the Bodmer museum retraces the history of civilization with a chronological presentation that covers some five thousand years since the discovery of writing.
