Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Jura in Vevey
It took a while, but the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Jura were reunited at the occasion of the Fête des Vignerons in Vevey, which is organised once every 20-25 years. It is also the first time that all 26 cantons make their appearance at one of the 21 days of the grandiose, stylish and great event. More than 5 000 actors, 800 singers and 100 musicians provide a perfectly arranged spectacle every day, with a captivating choreography. The performances take place in a temporary stadium on the Vevey market square, which can accommodate 20 000 spectators.
However, on 28 July, for the first time since the beginning of the Fête on 18 July, the wine gods were apparently in a bad mood. It did not stop the joint cortège of both cantons, however. Late in the evening a delegation from Basel-Landschaft gave a performance of the famous torchlight parade of the city of Liestal, which takes place every year at the Fasnacht. Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft are two (semi) cantons since 1833. Kanton Jura was founded in 1979 and in that year it seceded from the canton of Bern (by referendum, of course). The territory of the canton of Jura belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Basel until the French invasion in 1792 and 1798. After the French defeat and the dissolution of the Prince-Bishopric in 1815, the territory was largely allocated to Bern.
