Archaeological Site of Saint-Pierre Cathedral

The remains of churches pre-dating the Saint-Pierre Cathedral are hidden beneath this medieval building of the twelfth century. The oldest church dates back to the 4th century.

The site also holds evidence of the hill’s occupation as far back as the Celtic and Roman eras:  wells, wheat processing areas, statues, fundaments of Roman buildings, tombs of the Celtic Allobroges tribe, and many other finds. It is one of the most significant archaeological sites north of the Alps.
