Weather station of Grand-St-Bernhard

The weather station of Grand-St-Bernhard, which was founded in 1817 by monks, celebrated 200 years of uninterrupted meteorological observation, today by Meteo Swiss. At an altitude of 2473 m, the Hospice of Grand-St-Bernhard was founded in 1080. It has long been known for its religious community and St Bernhard dogs, known for the rescue of travellers lost in the mountains.

The weather station boasts one of the world’s longest and most robust continuous reports of meteorological observations. On 14 September 1817, the monks founded the meteorological observation station, the first in the Alps. The work continued until 1934, when the authorities took over. The World Meteorological Organisation has recently issued the station with a certificate and a metal plaque indicating it as a centenary observation station. (source:
