The Wine Festivity Vevey 2019
14 June 2019
The Fête des Vignerons (UNESCO Cultural Heritage) is an open-air spectacle organised once a generation and pays homage to the wine-growing traditions of the entire region.
The festival is centuries-old and the twelfth edition takes place from 18 July to 11 August with a spectacular show in the arena on the market square, parades in the city and many other activities and festivities. The event is organised in Vevey by the Confrérie des Vignerons.
The show symbolizes a year in the life of viticulture by twenty scenes that begin and end with the harvest. It combines the work on the vineyard, the social life in the region and general themes such as the seasons and the weather. It addresses the relationship between man and nature and is also a tribute to the craftsmanship of winegrowers and their employees.
The music is alternated with pieces by ensembles, orchestra or small formations, accompanied by the choir (about 800 singers), the Harmony (120 brass band musicians), a Big Band (16 jazz musicians), 40 percussionists, 36 alpine horns, a small ensemble of 20 musicians and the piccolo’s and drums of 36 musicians from Basel. The scenes are performed by 5 500 actors and actresses in beautiful costumes.
For the first time in the history of the Fête des Vignerons, all cantons will also participate, making Vevey the capital of Switzerland for a summer, Swiss residents abroad and the Vevey-Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut region will also receive a special day of honour, as will the Confederation on the national holiday 1 August. Two museums in Vevey (Musée de la photographie and Musée de la Confrérie des Vignerons) present a historical overview of this unique festival. (More information and tickets: www.fetedesvignerons.ch).
