Napoleon assigned Tarasp to the canton of Grisons in 1803 (Mediationsakte). Previously, the area was an enclave of the Habsburgs. Tarasp is for this reason the only community in Unterengadin with a Catholic majority of inhabitants. The famous mineral springs Luzius, Emerita, Bonifazius, and Carola formed the basis of the great prosperity after 1860. The large spa hotels (Kurhaus Tarasp, Schweizerhof and Walhaus Hotel (burnt down in 1989) were built between 1875 and 1910. Today there is no longer a demand for spa tourism as there was before the Second World War, but nature, sports, and other leisure activities offer new perspectives. The National Park, a beautiful hiking and skiing area, a golf resort and the Museum Nairs are the new destinations in this monumental village and Scuol is not far away neither.
