The Museum of the Canton of Glarus in the Freuler Palace (Freulerpalast) is dedicated to various areas of the history and culture of the Canton of Glarus in permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Visitors learn more about Kaspar Freuler, the palace’s builder (around 1595-1651), and his time. The cultural history section looks back to the first settlements in the region.
The exhibition section on textiles examines what was, for a long time, the most crucial industry in the Glarus region. One section tells the story of Glarus’ pioneering role in this field.
The Freuler Palace, a testament to the grandeur of the 17th century, was left behind by its owner as one of the most magnificent Swiss residential buildings. Kaspar Freuler from Näfels, who served the French kings as a contractor of mercenaries, was the mastermind behind this historical jewel.
Freuler, a guard colonel, involved craftsmen from all over Europe. They created this architectural masterpiece from 1642 to 1648.
The representative rooms, with their impressive stucco work, richly ornamented panelling, inlay work, and coffered ceilings, are a testament to the client’s wealth and the exceptional skills of the craftsmen. These rooms, still completely preserved today, offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the past.
