A Multilingual Country
10 December 2019
At a time when (young) Swiss citizens from German-speaking cantons sometimes have to communicate with their fellow citizens in French-speaking cantons in English in order to understand each other, the Forum for Bilingualism in Biel/Bienne is not an unnecessary luxury.
Not to mention the Italian- or Romansh-speaking inhabitants of the country. In the canton of Grisons, the only trilingual canton (German, Italian, Romansh), and Italian speaking Ticino one can speak about it as well.
The Forum is a foundation domiciled in Biel/Bienne, the largest bilingual city in Switzerland. Its main activity is raising the awareness for the advantages of a multilingual approach in education, politics, business, culture and other fields.
The Forum is a partner for institutions seeking advice concerning bi- and multilingual aspects thanks to its broad experience in the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne and the bilingual structures in place in the officially bilingual canton (state) of Berne.
The Forum is in close contact with various language research institutions and helps linguists to realize their research projects based on experiences in Biel/Bienne.(Source and further information:www.bilinguisme.ch).
